The expansion of the Kansanshi copper and gold mine near Solwezi in Zambia’s NorthWestern Province is now 80% complete, according to the mine’s Assistant General Manager, Axel Kotten. The upgrade, known as the S3 Expansion Project, aims to significantly increase the mine’s output, reinforcing Zambia’s role as a global copper powerhouse.

Minister of Mines and Mineral Development, Hon. Paul Kabuswe, recently visited the site to assess progress and reaffirm the government’s commitment to supporting the mining sector’s growth. Once complete, the expansion is expected to greatly enhance copper production and export capacity.

Beyond boosting output, the project is already making a tangible impact on the local economy. It has created 900 direct jobs for residents and a further 300 indirect employment opportunities. Solwezi Central Member of Parliament, Stafford Mulusa, welcomed these developments, highlighting that more than 140 local contractors have been engaged in the project.

The expansion remains on schedule and is expected to be fully operational before the end of 2025. This milestone aligns with Zambia’s broader national strategy to increase mining revenues and expand employment opportunities across key provinces.
